Working away in a local cafe, I overheard a conversation between 2 young jobseekers comparing the current job market to online dating.
Their idea of a fruitful job search was to throw as many 'hooks' in as many directions as possible with hope one would reply. "All entry level job ads look the same anyway, why would you waste your time reading that…"
This made me think about how putting a minimal effort on both sides brings little results and no one seems to bother about it. Is this really the way things are now?
I previously conducted a hiring for an executive assistant and met with some of the most interesting people. Most were at the very start of their careers and they actually made the time and effort to reach out prior to the interview. They researched the job and company before applying and it was really evident in the interview and cover letter. I only needed one assistant hire for myself. However, the three other candidates showed such determination and motivation, I vetted them for various other positions across the company and successfully placed them all.
So definitely it’s not all doom and gloom out there. I'd say the right ad will attract the right candidate and that would be the only comparison I'd make to online dating in regards to recruitment.
Like attracts like!
